Probing Dense Matter in the Cores of Agn: Observations with Rxte and Asca

چکیده

Preliminary results from an X-ray spectral study of Seyfert 1 galaxies with ASCA and RXTE are presented. From an analysis of X-ray reprocessing features of Compton reflection and Fe Kα fluorescence, it is found that iron line strength is not necessarily a good predictor of the amount of reflection. The variability properties of Fe Kα and reflection do not necessarily scale together and substantial decoupling of the behavior of the reprocessed flux with respect to continuum variability is common. Such trends suggest the presence of multiple and/or complex regions of dense matter in AGN cores and that standard, simple accretion disk models drastically oversimplify reality.

PDS 456 : an Extreme Accretion Rate Quasar ?

We present quasi-simultaneous ASCA and RXTE observations of the most luminous known AGN in the local (z < 0.3) universe, the recently discovered quasar PDS 456. Multiwavelength observations have been conducted which show that PDS 456 has a bolometric luminosity of ∼ 10 erg s peaking in the UV part of the spectrum. In the X-ray band the 2-10 keV (rest-frame) luminosity is 10 erg s. The broad-ban...

On the hard X-ray spectra of radio-loud active galaxies

Over the last few years X-ray observations of broad-line radio galaxies (BLRGs) by ASCA, RXTE and BeppoSAX have shown that these objects seem to exhibit weaker X-ray reflection features (such as the iron Kα line) than radio-quiet Seyferts. This has lead to speculation that the optically-thick accretion disc in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) may be truncated to an optically-thin flow in...

RXTE observations of RX J0146.9+6121: a new X-ray outburst of the Be/X-ray pulsar

RXTE observations of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0146.9+6121 in July 1997 revealed the begin of a new Xray outburst, the second observed after its discovery in August 1984 by EXOSAT. The flux increased by nearly a factor of five within one week reaching 3.2 10−10 erg cm−2 s−1. The corresponding X-ray luminosity for a distance of 2.5 kpc is an order of magnitude brighter than the level observ...

An Rxte Survey of Long-term X-ray Variability in Seyfert 1 Galaxies

Data from the first three years of RXTE observations have been systematically analyzed to yield a set of 300 day, 2-10 keV light curves with similarly uniform, ∼5 day sampling, for a total of nine Seyfert 1 galaxies. This is the first X-ray variability survey to consistently probe time scales longer than a few days in a large number of AGN. Comparison with ASCA data covering a similar band but ...

X-ray Variability of Blazars

Critical progress in our understanding of high energy emission from AGN has been determined in the last 10 years by X-ray monitoring campaigns with many space missions, notably ROSAT, ASCA, RXTE, BeppoSAX, and XMM, often in conjunction with observations at other frequencies. The emphasis of the present review is on recent findings about X-ray variability of blazars. Among AGN, these exhibit the...
